In Bogota, we were lucky to meet fellow blogger Chris, head of seecolombia.travel, one of the top 5 travel blogs in Colombia. Chris gained my immediate trust for suggesting we meet up for a coffee date. He was kind enough to give us the inside scoop on the best coffee in the city, recommendations I don’t take lightly considering he’s been a Bogota resident for 3 years and is nearly as much of an addict as I am.

We read his top 5 list, and decided to challenge ourselves by visiting all of them in the same afternoon. After sampling all the options, we chose our top 3 stops. We based on decision on atmosphere, service and coffee taste.

You can comfortably sip your brew from their cozy red couches, served by the 2 reigning national barista champions, or you can buy their award winning coffee by the pound for about 32,000 COP per 500g (about $10 USD). I admit, during our 2-month stay, I was guilty of purchasing several bags to use at home with our french press. You can buy whole beans or have it ground in front of you, specifically for your method of preparation. My favorites were the Arnulfo Leguizamon from San Agustin-Huila (the orange label) and the Astrid Medina from Planada Tolimo (the purple label), winner of the Cup of Excellence 2015. The manager also gave us an outstanding service while we were there, he offered a couple of tasting options shortly after we had finished our Chemex.

A sustainable, unique project, the café is built out of a shipping container, complete with a picturesque roof deck. Their mission statement written on a chalkboard struck a cord “Life is too short to drink bad coffee,” I certainly couldn’t agree more.

With an artsy, sustainable vibe and fair-trade coffee practices, it’s an ideal spot for the environment-friendly coffee connoisseur. The baristas are very knowledgeable about their beans, from origin to cup, and very artistic, creating some of the most elaborate coffee art I have ever seen in the foam of the lattes and cappuccinos. They are also conveniently located in the parking lot of Hub Bogota, a co-working space.

A beautiful, rustic cafe with a relaxing outdoor patio, complete with flowers and (when we were there) a nest full of baby birds happily chirping away. They also boast an excellent variety of first quality coffee to sample, with divine chemex brews if you want to taste the coffees’ pure notes, or elegant coffee cocktails if you’re feeling adventurous. Our barista on this afternoon took excellent care of us, he walked us through the whole process and was very informative.

Conveniently located within a 10 block radius, you can go for a leisurely stroll and hit all three cafes in one afternoon like we did, though you may be a bit jittery by the end (we couldn’t sleep for hours).

We ordered the chemex at each one of the locations, so we had good base for comparison, and because it is considered the best form to determine the quality and flavors of the coffee.

We also went back (on another day, once the caffeine had finally left our systems) to sample their other coffee beverages and purchase beans for our french press.
