[:en]Bacalar served as a quick stop in our way towards Belize. It’s a small town on the shore of what is known as the lagoon of the seven colors, as it gets its blue tints from the many interconnected cenotes, each one giving one tonality. It’s a sleepy town that is mostly used to access the lake that is about 42km long by only 2km across.
We were kindly hosted by a member of the CouchSurfing community in an amazing eco-friendly farm just outside town. Christian was born in Mexico, but was raised north of San Francisco. He made the move to the land he currently lives in about 4 years ago. He has been designing and building structures for this soon-to-be hostel/hotel only a few steps from the Lagoon. He’s well connected with the artist movement of the lagoon and could possibly show you everything there is to know about the area.
We had only one night to enjoy the city but Christian made sure we didn’t have a dull moment. We attended a theater production at a local bar and enjoyed some amazing food around the Plaza.
